Keithley Launches New General Purpose Programmable Power Supply Product Line

Keithley Instruments, Inc., a world leader in advanced electrical test instruments and systems, announced today the availability of five new general-purpose programmable DC power supplies designed to complement the company’s existing line of specialty power supplies and source measurement instruments for component, module, and device characterization and test applications. The Series 2200 family combines superior voltage and current output accuracy at a cost-effective price, flexible operation, and features designed to enhance ease of use in a variety of device characterization or test applications.

The five models in the Series 2200 line offer maximum voltage, current, and power output levels designed to address a wide range of sourcing requirements for characterizing components, circuits, modules, and complete devices:
  • Model 2200-20-5: 20V, 5A, 100W
  • Model 2200-30-5: 30V, 5A, 150W
  • Model 2200-32-3: 32V, 3A, 96W
  • Model 2200-60-2: 60V, 2.5A, 150W
  • Model 2200-72-1: 72V, 1.2A, 86W
The voltage output accuracy of Series 2200 power supplies is specified at 0.03%; their current output accuracy is 0.05%. Both specifications are significantly better than those of competitive general-purpose supplies. In addition, their high output (1mV) and measurement (0.1mA) resolution makes them well-suited for characterizing low power circuits and devices in applications such as measuring idle mode and sleep mode currents to confirm devices can meet today's ever-more-challenging goals for energy efficiency. Remote sense terminals on the back panel and less than 5mVp-p noise help ensure that the voltage programmed is the voltage that the supply actually outputs. A dual-line display shows both the programmed values and actual outputs for a continuous indication of the status of the power delivered to the load.

Series 2200 supplies include a variety of features designed to enhance operating versatility. For example, each model provides 40 onboard memory locations for storing frequently used test setups for later recall and reuse. In addition, a built-in list mode function supports the programming and storage of up to seven custom test sequences of up to 80 steps. Once saved, a sequence can be triggered to run manually using the instrument's front panel keys, automatically via an external trigger, or by using programmable interface commands. Competitive general-purpose power supplies don’t provide these capabilities.

Several Series 2200 features help protect DUTs from damage during testing, including a programmable voltage limit value that prevents the supply from outputting excessive voltage (even if a voltage higher than the limit is entered into the instrument) and a programmable over-voltage function that causes the output to drop to less than 1V if the over-voltage limit is reached. These limits are in addition to the current limit setting function, which controls the level of current that can flow into the DUT. Also, a programmable timer can be used to turn off the output after a specified time interval, so tests can be preprogrammed to run unattended without worrying about excess voltage or power being applied to the DUT for an extended period of time.

Multiple methods for adjusting the supplies' voltage and current settings are provided, including a direct-entry numeric keypad on the front panel. In addition, a rotary knob with adjustable step size simplifies studying the response of a device-under-test (DUT) to voltage or current changes.

Series 2200 power supplies can be controlled easily over either a standard GPIB or USB interface. The USB interface is test and measurement class (TMC) compliant, so users can employ the standard SCPI command syntax. Standard instrument drivers are included to simplify integrating the power supplies into an automated test environment.

Keithley Upgrades Semiconductor Test Software for High Throughput Wafer Production Test

Keithley Instruments, Inc., a world leader in advanced electrical test instruments and systems, has introduced an upgrade to its popular Keithley Test Environment (KTE) semiconductor test software. KTE Version 5.3 is designed for use with Keithley's S530 Parametric Test Systems, the company's fastest, most cost-effective line of process control monitoring solutions to date.

KTE is a powerful test development and execution software platform that has served hundreds of semiconductor fabs worldwide with Keithley's previous-generation parametric test systems. Now, Keithley's S530 test systems can leverage the same industry-proven software platform, providing flexible test plan development and high speed test execution for even the most demanding production environments. Users of existing Keithley S400 and S600 Series parametric testers especially benefit from KTE Version 5.3 on the S530 because existing measurement routines can easily be ported to the S530, and identical test plans can be shared between existing testers and new S530 systems.

Extending the KTE test development and execution environment to S530 systems brings together the advantages of Keithley's three decades of field experience in parametric test code development with the fastest, most advanced system hardware available in the market. S530 instrumentation provides the speed and wide measurement range that parametric test applications like process control monitoring demand.

Keithley is committed to supporting its parametric test customers by providing new test systems that are highly compatible with its earlier systems. This commitment to maintaining software compatibility ensures a smoother migration path and protects fabs' test software investment when adding newer, faster testers to their test floors. For new Keithley parametric test customers, this commitment to system software continuity means they can be confident their test systems are based on industry-proven software.

For customers already using earlier versions of KTE, KTE V5.3 speeds and simplifies integrating S530 test systems into their test floors:

The same test recipes and test plans can be used for all Keithley automated parametric test systems, which not only shortens the learning curve for test engineers and operators working with multiple systems but offers a smooth migration path to protect the fab's test development investment when adding new high speed systems to the test floor or replacing older ones.

Users can continue working with the familiar user libraries they've developed for earlier Keithley systems over the years after recompiling and rebuilding them for use with the S530. Typically, only minimal debugging is required.

KTE V5.3 simplifies creating new user access point (UAP) source code for conditional test sequencing and customizing the flow of the S530's system operation. UAP source code developed for earlier Keithley systems is applicable to S530 systems with minimal adjustments.

The tools within KTE provide identical functionality for all Keithley parametric test platforms.

KTE for the S530 is designed to run on a Linux operating system on a standard industrial PC to ensure long-term stability and ease of maintenance. The software has been optimized for speed and extended reliability in high throughput production test environments. S530 systems running KTE V5.3 can address all the DC I-V and C-V measurements required in process control monitoring, process reliability monitoring, and device characterization. They are optimized for use in production parametric test environments that must accommodate a broad mix of products or wherever wide application flexibility and fast test plan development are critical.

Keithley Expands Series 2400 SourceMeter® Family with Lower-Cost Solution Optimized for Low Voltage Testing

Keithley Instruments, Inc., a world leader in advanced electrical test instruments and systems, announced today a low-cost addition to its popular Series 2400 SourceMeter® instrument family. Like all of Keithley's SMU (source measurement unit) instruments, the new Model 2401 SourceMeter instrument is optimized for high precision test applications such as current vs. voltage (I V) characterization of photovoltaic (solar) cells, high brightness LEDs (HBLEDs), low voltage materials, and semiconductor devices, as well as resistance measurements; however, it now provides these advanced source and measurement unit capabilities at 20V and 1A signal levels and at an unprecedented low price.

According to marketing manager Charles Cimino, "The Model 2401 is priced at $USD2995, making it the test and measurement industry's lowest cost standalone source measurement instrument with a complete set of measurement ranges, features, and programmable operating modes." He went on to note that it offers an economical alternative to test systems configured with separate programmable power supplies and digital multimeters or applications for which precision programmable power supplies lack sufficient accuracy, signal range, or resolution.

The Model 2401 operates and is programmed in exactly the same way as the other Series 2400 family member units within its 1A/20V range boundaries. Like the rest of this popular source measurement unit family, the Model 2401 integrates a highly stable DC power source with a true instrument-grade 5-1/2 or 6-1/2-digit multimeter in a single enclosure.

In operation, the Model 2401 can act as a voltage source, a current source, a voltmeter, an ammeter, and an ohmmeter, and provides four-quadrant bipolar and automatic source/sink operation. Referring to Keithley SMU convention, operating in I vs. V quadrants 1 or 3, it operates as a source, delivering power to a load. In quadrants 2 or 4, it operates as a sink, dissipating power internally from an external source such as a PV cell or other energy source.

Fast, Automated Health Check for Multi-Axis Machine Tools

Renishaw's AxiSet™ Check-Up is a cost-effective solution for checking the alignment and positioning performance of rotary axes. In just a few minutes, users of five-axis machining centres and multi-tasking mill-turn machines can identify and report on poor machine alignments and geometry that can cause extended process setting times, as well as non-conforming parts. The latest release is now available, offering significant new benefits to users.

There has been strong growth in the market for multi-axis machines, but until now, no easy and reliable process for analysing the performance of their rotary axes and identifying problems caused by incorrect machine set-up, collisions or wear. Key to precision machining is the ability to understand the location of the centres of rotation of the rotary axes relative to the machine's linear axes. Without accurate data about these ‘pivot points', a machine's controller will be unable to reliably control the relative positions of the tool and the component as the rotary axes are moving, leading to inconsistent machining results.

Renishaw's AxiSet Check-Up provides accurate and repeatable test results using automated probing routines to gather performance data from a reference artefact, and includes simple, yet powerful analysis. All tests utilise existing spindle-mounted Renishaw touch probes, which are standard fitment on most multi-axis machines, with probing routines generated using machine-specific macro software supplied with AxiSet Check-Up.

Angular plotSet-up is fast and simple. To perform the test a user quickly locates a supplied calibration sphere within the machine tool's working envelope using a magnetic mount. Using the supplied custom macro software, a touch probe is then programmed to automatically take reference measurements around the sphere. Users are in full control and can define their own test angles to ensure that machines are tested at critical orientations. To ensure the highest test accuracy, the use of Renishaw's high accuracy Rengage™ strain-gauge probes is recommended.

Measurement results from the AxiSet Check-Up test are output to a PC where a supplied Microsoft® Excel® spreadsheet presents easily understood analysis of the data and compares machine performance with defined tolerances.

Analysis of a machine's capabilities is presented in various formats including a graphical representation of performance that highlights tracking and centring errors, a function that compares two sets of data for the same machine, a simple ‘pass' or ‘fail' test against the user's pre-defined tolerances, and a history screen that allows comparisons of the performance of rotary axes over time. All spreadsheet analysis can be incorporated in a simple report generated using Microsoft® Word®.

View historyThe latest AxiSet Check-Up release 2 now offers significant new benefits. Errors in pivot points and lathe centre lines defined along the linear axes (as commonly stored in CNCs) are reported individually, providing users with recommended correction values for machine optimisation. Depending on the user's preference, errors can be reported in either incremental or absolute modes. There is an additional calculation strategy that can be manually selected to establish the pivot points best suited to users machining either free forms or angled features. Other new functionalities in release 2 include the ability to automatically backup and restore multiple data sets, and compatibility with Microsoft® Windows 7 and Office 2010.

To ensure the optimum analysis of rotary axis performance using AxiSet™ Check-Up, it is important that the machine's standard three linear axes are also performing within specification. This should be determined and corrected if necessary using Renishaw's XL-80 laser calibration system, and then regularly checked using a Renishaw QC20-W ballbar. Together these powerful performance testing products combine to ensure the highest quality parts can be consistently produced by five-axis machining centres and mill-turn machines.

New Sensor Allows Fully Automated Surface Finish Measurement on Co-Ordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs)

Renishaw has added a new probe option to its revolutionary REVO® five-axis measurement system, which for the first time, allows surface finish inspection to be fully integrated within CMM measurement routines.

With a measurement capability of 6.3 to 0.05 Ra, the SFP1 surface finish probe provides a unique ‘single platform' that will eliminate the need for hand-held sensors, or the necessity to move parts to costly dedicated surface finish measuring machines, reducing labour costs and inspection lead times. CMM users will now be able to automatically switch between part scanning and surface finish measurement, with analysis all contained in a single measurement report.

As a fully integrated option for the REVO 5-axis measurement system, users of the SFP1 surface finish probe will benefit from a range of powerful features that will boost inspection speed and flexibility.

The probe incorporates a C axis, which combined with the infinite positioning capability of the REVO measuring head and a choice of styli, allows the probe tip to be automatically orientated to any angle to suit the part, ensuring that the highest quality surface data is acquired. The SFP1 is supplied with two dedicated styli, the SFS-1 straight stylus and SFS-2 cranked stylus, which are selected under full measurement program control using the REVO system's modular rack system (MRS). This enables flexible access to component features combined with the consistency of a fully-automated CNC methodology.

A skidded probe type with a 2 μm (0.000079 in) tip radius diamond stylus, the SFP1 surface finish probe outputs Ra, RMS and raw data formats to the metrology application client software via Renishaw's UCCServer software using the I++ DME protocol. The raw data can subsequently be presented to specialist surface analysis software packages for further detailed reporting.

Calibration of the sensor is also automated and carried out within a CMM software programme. A new surface finish calibration artefact (SFA) is mounted on the MRS rack and is measured using the SFP1 probe. Software then adjusts parameters within the probe in accordance with the artefact's calibrated value.

Packet-Master USB-PET is connected to a host PC using a High-Speed USB connection, and controlled using the GraphicUSB application software, which can generate test reports and perform analyzer-style captures.USB-PET’s front panel features a micro-AB receptacle and a D-type connector for connection to a Unit-Under-Test. The rear-panel allows the connection of a meter or an oscilloscope for monitoring, for example, VBUS voltage.

The comprehensive series of tests that Packetmaster USB-PET can perform includes:
  • OTG Compliance Testing:  USB-PET provides automated compliance testing of both the data protocol and the electrical and timing requirements of the 'On-The-Go and Embedded Host Supplement to the USB Revision 2.0 Specification'. All aspects of On-The-Go and Embedded Hosts are tested, including VBUS voltage and current performance, and SRP, HNP and ADP protocols.
  • Battery Charging Compliance Testing: USB-PET can carry out the compliance testing required by the USB Charging Port Compliance Plan, including tests on Charging Ports, Portable Devices, and Accessory Charger Adapters.
  • Analyzer Functionality: USB-PET can capture an analysis of bus activity during the compliance test, in the same format as other MQP analyzers. This allows rapid investigation of protocol-based test failures.
  • Control of Testing: Tests are usually carried out as a suite for a particular type of Unit-Under-Test (UUT) but individual tests can also be selected to investigate a particular failure. Users can even write their own test scripts to modify parameters for more in-depth or special investigations.
  • High Speed Electrical Test Modes: Single click operations allow the initiation of any of the High Speed Electrical Test modes defined in the supplement and the core USB specification.

Switchtec’s Counter Timers are Small and Smart

Fulfilling the demands of industry for cost effective, workhorse, versatile timers, the Anly H7E from specialist distributor Switchtec offers users valuable monitoring facilities in control panels and other equipments where lapsed time or events have to recorded.

The H7E is available as two variants to cover specific tasks. The H7E-C is an 8-digit totalising counter, and the H7E-T is a 7-digit timer counter. The H7E-C has the option for standard (30Hz nominal) counting, and using a built in DIP switch can be converted to high speed 1kHz counting. It can count up to 999,999,999.

The H7E-T hours run counter display can be switched between hours and minutes or hours, minutes and seconds, again via the built in DIP switch. It can count up to 9999h 59.9m or 999h 59m 59s.

For simplicity and speed of fitting and deployment, both units are powered from an internal 3V DC battery that in the case of the H7E-C has a very long life of seven years, increasing to 10 years for the H7E-T. The battery is very easy to change, and a pull out tab ensures the battery is not being drained during pre fitment storage. An optional 24V AC/DC can be supplied to the timers if a backlit facility is required in a poorly lit application.

Both versions of the H7E counters feature a very compact design, measuring just 47.9x34x54.5mm and mount into a panel cut out of just 44.7x22.2mm. Similarly, both versions have built in reset facilities. This reset can be effected either at the front of the panel or remotely using the terminals at the back of the counter. The front reset can be disabled using the selector switch on the counter, thus preventing false resets.

When mounted in a panel, a rubber sealing gasket ensures that an IP65 degree of protection is achieved. A maximum relative operating humidity of 85% is specified for the timers.

Aimed at panel builders, equipment manufacturers, H&V companies and OEMs these Anly timers from Switchtec are versatile and cost effective. The timers are available ex stock from Switchtec, and its experienced field sales and office based technical staff are able to provide both pre and post sales product support.

Switchtec’s Through Panel Terminals Improve Electrical Isolation and Simplify Interconnectivity

Available from specialist distributor Switchtec, Euroclamp’s MPT ‘through panel’ terminals offer ease of installation and wiring in applications where there is a need to interconnect internal components, particularly in sectionalised housings. They also offer good insulation properties and help to reduce stray capacitance problems by maintaining wiring in a more regulated, consistent fashion.

Aimed at OEMs, panel builders, CEMs, equipment manufacturers, and filter manufacturers the terminals are ideal for use in filters and control panels. There are twelve versions of the MPT series currently available based on the following models; the MTP275 rated at 24A, MPT410 (32A), MPT610 (41A), MPT1010 (57A), MPT1612 (76A), MPT2515 (101A) and the latest addition to the range, the 150A rated MPT5018.

To suit a wide range of applications, most of the MPT series are available with different termination types. The options available are solder tag, hook, blade or screw. Offering versatility and convenience, there are two methods of fixing the MPT series terminals to the panel; wedge comb is fast, easy and secure, alternatively a locknut style provides a more secure fixing whilst taking a little longer to fit.

Most of the MPT series have UL/CSA, VDE, IMQ and CE approvals and Euroclamp are constantly adding to or improving the range. The MPT series is supplied as standard in grey plastic, however Euroclamp is able to produce the terminals to order in many colours including black, green, orange, blue, red, etc.

Euroclamp identified that there were a small number of manufacturers for this type of terminal yet demand was strong. As a manufacturer of terminal blocks and connectors, Euroclamp used its in-house expertise to design and manufacture a range of through panel terminal blocks.

Euroclamp MPT series through panel terminals are fully RoHS compliant and are available competitively priced, ex stock from Switchtec.

Switchtec’s Beacons Use SMD and LED Technology for Reliability and High Performance in Any Installation

Available from specialist distributor Switchtec, the latest range of beacons from Sirena meet customers’ demand for smaller, more efficient, more compact alarms and beacons with brighter outputs, longer lasting bulbs and enhanced, ‘performance packed’ features. Sirena has completely re-developed its existing LED range of beacons, naming it the SMD LED range, using the latest surface mount LED technology.

The new range will find favour with users in a wide range of applications including control automation, security applications, electric vehicles, evacuation/warning applications, factory automation, panel builders, educational establishments and in fact anywhere where a visual warning and/or an audible one is required.

Use of the latest surface mount LED technology gives the SMD range low power consumption, zero maintenance, high vibration resistance, 100,000 hours of life, excellent optical definition, improved light output, and multi function outputs. Both the Microlamp and the CTL products in the range take advantage of this technology to offer a combined flashing and continuous beacon in the same housing. The Ovolux beacon goes further and offers a selectable output via a built in DIP switch. This enables the installer to choose from four light functions; continuous, single flash, double flash or the new triple flash. The CTL and the Microlamp flashing option is the triple flash that closely resembles a Xenon flash albeit from an LED Bulb.

Exhibiting versatility and choice, colours available are blue, amber, red, green, yellow and clear. The SMD range is currently available in two voltage versions, the low voltage one has an input range of 12-24VAC/DC, and high voltage one that offers a 90–240VAC input range. Along with the multi function output, this wide input range feature helps to reduce stock holding even further. A 48VDC/DC option is also available upon request.

The SMD series has an ingress protection rating from IP54 to IP65 and as a result the weatherproof, compact beacons can safely be installed indoors or outdoors as required by the application. The CTL and the Microlamp units are surface mount types, but the Ovolux can be also be through panel mount or, using the accessories from the TWS range, pole or wall mounted.

The SMD series is simple to install and wire with connections in the base of the units. The cable can be fed underneath (panel mount) for the CTL beacons, or via the cable gland on the Microlamp beacon (supplied with the unit) or through panel mounting with the Ovolux.

Both the CTL and the Microlamp offer a version with a built in sounder, this gives greater flexibility bringing as it does, an audible warning to a visual beacon.

Sirena has been producing alarm and beacons since 1974 and is well known in industry for manufacturing high quality, technically advanced products. The company is at the forefront of innovation and technology for the beacon and alarm market and has a long established name for producing high quality beacons and sounders. Sirena has combined that innovation and technology with its vast experience to produce the new SMD series - a compact, high quality beacon with excellent output qualities.

The new SMD products utilise existing product enclosures, with completely new surface mount LED technology inside. The products demonstrate Sirena’s continued ability to develop new products and manufacture the best alarms and beacons available on the market.

Switchtec is able to provide full technical advice and backup from it’s Stone based head office, or from its experienced field sales team that operates across the whole of the British Isles.

Switchtec’s Popular 10D Pushbuttons Upgraded with Metal Bezel Version for Pro Appearance and Even More Strength

For use in 22mm and 30mm pushbutton applications, Switchtec’s SCL 10D pushbuttons now include a metal bezel version for applications that demand ultimate ‘bright metal’ aesthetics and also adding strength and further robustness to the mounted product. The pushbuttons are a cost effective, high quality alternative to other high profile brands, providing specifiers and buyers with an alternative or secondary source for improved pricing structures and/or a secure, constant supply of switches.

Aimed at OEMs, CEMs, panel builders, and equipment manufacturers, the pushbuttons are for use in a wide variety of control panels in both industrial and commercial applications.

To meet the needs of the marketplace and for an efficient HMI, the revised pushbuttons feature a modern, more compact design, coupled with improved installation and wiring.

In HMI terms the SCL 10D series comprises flush head, extended head, mushroom head, extended head latching, mushroom twist to release, mushroom push pull, and a twin head push button. All are available in red, yellow, blue, green and white (illuminated and opaque versions) and also a black opaque version.

All of the 10D series are available in either 22mm or 30mm mounting, and are supplied complete with locking nut and contact block. The new metal bezel versions utilise aluminium for the bezel that is both lightweight – an added bonus where many buttons are fitted to automotive equipment – and it also imparts a prestigious, upmarket look and feel to host equipments using the pushbuttons. The metal bezels can be used in harsh environments and in conjunction with, and indeed fully interchangeable with the plastic bezels.

The units’ detachable selector switches are available for use with a standard head, extended head, and also as a key switch type. The 10D series includes enclosed push button stations, whereby all buttons are available ready fitted in an IP65 grey or yellow enclosure.

Illuminated versions are available using LED technology. By incorporating LED technology the 10D series offers a very low power consumption of less than 13mA per unit.

All of the 10D series pushbuttons are available in red, yellow, blue, green and white (illuminated and non-illuminated versions) and also a black opaque version. The pushbuttons have an ingress protection rating of IP65 when installed into a panel. All are fully RoHS compliant and carry UL/CSA, TUV and CE approval.

In many ways, Switchtec’s SCL 10D series has been developed to meet the requirements of the Installer. As time is an ever-decreasing resource, SCL has designed the series to be user friendly and simple to install.

10D series push buttons are supplied with a unique contact block coupling that features a built in quick release button, designed to make installation easier and much faster, yet providing a robust and safe installation. The use of a fixing tool that is supplied as an accessory enables rapid tightening of the locking ring. The button is simply operated by hand from either the front or the back of the panel, with the emphasis on swift installation. Further, colour coded contacts enable easy recognition (red = normally closed, green = normally open)

Previously the 10D series of pushbuttons were manufactured in grey plastic, however Switchtec recognised the demand from the market for a black version. Following a market survey it was established that black was indeed the preferred colour, so Switchtec has adopted black as the 10D colour.

The development of this industry standard style switch is well advanced and manufacturers and end users are looking for a modern, compact design with ease of installation and wiring. Human to machine interfaces will always require switches of this style.

The versatile SCL 10D series pushbutton is compact, easy to install and aesthetically pleasing to any panel builder. Units are available ex stock from distributor Switchtec.
